The HBCU Sustainable Communities Initiative (HBCU SCI), in collaboration with the Southern Company Foundation, is proud to announce the Sustainability Professorship program. This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to offer robust academic programs in environmental studies, climate change, sustainability, energy policy, economic development, urban planning, and related disciplines. The overarching goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and address economic and environmental challenges within their communities.
Program Overview
The Sustainability Professorship provides a unique opportunity for selected HBCUs within the Southern Company’s geographic footprint. Each chosen institution will receive a $500,000 grant, contingent upon raising an equivalent amount in matching funds. This collaboration will establish a $1 million endowment at each participating university, generating approximately $50,000 annually to support the salary of a professor specializing in sustainability.
